In 2003 plans for Operation Torch were born.
Operation Torch is the knickname given to the idea of finding a way to get younger generations (none-WWII) to continue the strong
bond which originated between the liberators of WWII and the civilian population.
By inviting younger generations to visit the Operation Market Garden area and Bastogne, Belgium on a
tour through the former battlefields, meeting the people and experiencing liberation ceremonies and
festivities, we intend to continue that strong bond.

The beautiful words of John McCrae in his poem "In Flanders Fields" which are inscribed on one of the walls at the US military
cemetary at Margraten in The Netherlands seemed perfect to underline the intent of continuation:

TO YOU FROM FAILING HANDS WE THROW THE TORCH - BE YOURS TO HOLD IT HIGH

It wasn't difficult to find a symbol.
Han Pulles, chairman of the Foundation, sat down to materialize it.
